Low water light stays on: what to check
The light usually means the water is at or under the minimum line, so refill to MAX first. If the tank is full and the light stays on, reseat the pump or tank, wipe the sensor area, and, on app-connected models, run the maker's calibration.
On this page
Fountain makers put a water sensor or float in the reservoir to protect the pump, which is meant to stay submerged while it runs. When the light comes on, the fountain is telling you one of three things: the water is low, the pump is not where it should be, or the sensor is confused.
Causes, from most to least common in the manuals
1. The water really is low
Check the MIN and MAX marks, not just how full the tank looks. Oneisall's manual says the light turns from blue to red at the minimum and the pump stops. PETKIT's manual describes the same behavior as standby. In both cases the fix is to unplug, fill to the MAX line, plug back in and confirm the light changes.
2. The pump or tank is not seated
Catit's PIXI manual lists an unseated pump alongside low water as the cause of a red LED. Lift the pump out, place it flat in its holder and make sure the cable is not trapped. For wireless pumps, such as PETKIT's, re-seat the pump in its slot and confirm the base has power.
3. A sensor that needs calibrating
Some app-connected models read the water level with a sensor under the tank. PETLIBRO's FAQ for the Dockstream 2 says a full tank can still show a low-water alert, or water can start and stop, until you reset the unit in the app and finish its calibration with the tank off the base on a flat surface. If you own a smart model, check the brand's FAQ before replacing anything.
4. Residue around the sensor
A film of scale or slime can interfere with a sensor or float. Clean the reservoir and wipe the sensor area; see the cleaning guide.
Quick fix sequence
- Unplug the fountain.
- Refill with fresh water to the MAX line.
- Reseat the pump or tank and make sure the base is level.
- Plug in and watch the light for a minute.
- If it persists, clean the pump and sensor area, then retry.
- For smart models, follow the maker's reset and calibration steps.
When to replace something
If the light stays on with a full, clean, correctly seated unit, contact the brand's support. The sensor or main unit may be faulty. Do not keep a fountain running that repeatedly shuts down on a dry pump, because dry runs are what several manuals warn about. If the pump itself no longer starts, see the noisy pump page and the pump finder for replacement options.
Causes and fixes: Low-water light stays on
Water has reached the minimum level
- Unplug the unit and pour in fresh water up to the MAX line.
- Plug it back in and check that the light is blue again.
- Keep the level between MIN and MAX; the pump shuts off on its own at the minimum.

Water sensor needs calibrating (low-water alert with a full tank, or flow that stops and starts)
- Press and hold the fountain in the Petlibro app and unbind it.
- Reset the fountain and add it to the app again.
- When the app starts the calibration, lift the tank off the base and clear everything off the base.
- Make sure the base sits on a flat, stable surface, confirm in the app and finish the calibration.

Pump LED blinking red because the reservoir is low or the pump is not seated
- Refill the reservoir.
- Check that the pump hangs level and is attached correctly to the top section.
- If the LED alternates red and white and flow is uneven, the water is almost gone, so top up.

Fountain in standby because the water level is too low (blue light flashing)
- Refill the tank with water.
- The fountain resumes normal operation once it is refilled.
- If the light alternates blue and green, replug the USB cable to restart it, and contact support if it persists.

FAQ
Why is the low water light on when the fountain is full?
Either the pump or tank is not seated correctly, the sensor is dirty or on an uneven surface, or an app-connected model needs recalibrating. PETLIBRO's FAQ describes this last case for the Dockstream 2.
Does the pump stop when the light comes on?
On many models, yes. Oneisall's manual says the pump shuts off on its own at the minimum level, and PETKIT describes a standby mode when the water is too low. Refilling restarts it.
What do blinking colors mean?
It depends on the brand. Catit's PIXI manual describes a red LED for low reservoir or an unseated pump, and PETKIT describes alternating blue and green. Use your own manual's chart.
Should I keep refilling instead of letting it run low?
Yes. Running near the minimum makes the pump work harder and invites dry-running. Check the level whenever you check your cat's food bowl.
