How to choose a cat water fountain

The table above is a cross-section of the cat models in our database, not a ranking. Every figure is the manufacturer's claim, each row links its source and shows when we checked it, and we did not handle any of these fountains ourselves. Use it to see how the main choices differ, then follow the links for a full list per need.

Material

The material the water touches changes how easy the fountain is to wipe down and how heavy it feels. Plastic is light and widely available; stainless steel is non-porous and easy to wipe; ceramic is heavy and glazed. If you want only steel, check both the bowl and body columns, because some models combine a steel top with a plastic tank. Noise

Makers rarely publish a method for their decibel claims, so we show only figures a manufacturer states and treat them as claims. Pump design matters as much: submersible pumps sit in the water, while wireless and pumpless designs such as the PETLIBRO Dockstream 2 and PETKIT models move the motor out of the reservoir. Power: plug-in or cordless

Most cat fountains plug into an adapter or USB port. Cordless models add a rechargeable battery and a sensor that runs the pump only when needed. If the best spot for the fountain is away from an outlet, go to the cordless and battery page and compare battery size first.

Capacity and number of cats

For one cat, 1.5 to 2 L is workable if you top up every day or two. For two or more cats, look at 3 L and above on the large and multi-cat page. More water means fewer refills and a pump that is less likely to run dry, but also a bigger unit to wash.

Cleaning effort

Cleaning is what decides whether a fountain stays pleasant to use. Count the washable parts, check which parts the maker calls dishwasher-safe, and plan to change the filter on schedule. Do cats need a fountain at all?

Many owners like fountains because moving water can prompt some cats to drink. Cats vary, though, and a clean, wide bowl works for plenty of them.
