Cat water fountain not working: find the cause
Most fountains that stop or sputter have one of four causes: the water fell below the minimum line, hair or debris is blocking the pump, the filter is clogged, or the power connection is loose. Check them in that order, because the first two take under a minute.
On this page
A fountain that goes quiet, trickles, or starts rattling usually has a simple cause. The diagram below follows the order that wastes the least time: start with the water level, then power, then the pump, then the filter and the path the water takes.
The tree shows the same sequence this page explains. Each branch ends either in a fix or in "replace the part", and the symptom pages linked further down go into each branch in more detail.
Start here: the five-minute check
- Water level. Look for the MIN and MAX marks. Pumps are built to sit under water, and several makers (PawsPik, iPettie, Oneisall) describe a dry or near-empty pump as a reason for it to stop or fail. Refill to the line, not just above the pump.
- Power. Unplug and replug the cable at the fountain and at the outlet. Try another outlet or adapter. For cordless models, check the charging indicator and that the cable is fully seated.
- Pump seating. A pump that has shifted in its holder may not draw water. Lift it out and place it back firmly.
- Hair and debris. Open the impeller cover, if your model has one, and pull out anything wound around the shaft.
- Filter. A saturated filter or foam block starves the pump. Rinse the foam (no soap) or fit a new filter if it is past the interval in your manual.
Which symptom do you have?
- Pump buzzes, rattles or gurgles: see noisy pump. The cause is usually low water, trapped air or debris on the impeller.
- A red or flashing light stays on: see low-water light. It often means exactly what it says, but a few app-connected models have a sensor that needs recalibrating.
- Water on the counter or floor: see leaking. Overflow from a dry filter, a tilted base and drips from a wet chin all look alike.
- Slimy film, pink residue or cloudy water: see slime and dirty water. This is a cleaning-routine problem more than a defect.
Weak flow, or no bubbling
There is no separate page for this one because it nearly always comes down to the same four causes: the level is low, the filter is clogged, the pump is dirty, or the flow control is set to minimum. The manuals in our database agree. Pioneer's support page ties weak flow to a filter past its change interval, Oneisall's manual to low water or a dirty pump, and PETLIBRO's FAQ to a clogged filter or debris around the pump. Catit's manual suggests simply unplugging and replugging first, then opening the pump if nothing changes.
When to give up on the part
Clean the pump properly before deciding. Replace the pump, not the whole fountain, when:
- it stays noisy or weak after a full clean with the water at the right level;
- it will not start even though power and water are fine;
- the impeller spins loosely or the housing is cracked.
Replace the whole fountain when the reservoir leaks, the bowl is cracked or deeply scratched, or the maker no longer sells the pump. Our pump finder shows which replacement pumps fit which models, and the filter schedule lists manufacturer intervals.
Brand-specific problems from our database
Below you will find causes and fixes grouped by problem, each with the manufacturer page it came from and the date we checked it. They are paraphrased from manuals and support pages. If your brand is not listed, the generic steps above still apply; look for the manual on the maker's support page.
Known issues and fixes
Pump stopped running because it needs its monthly cleaning
- Unplug the fountain and lift the pump out of the water.
- Take the pump apart as shown in Pioneer's pump-cleaning video and clear debris from every piece.
- Rinse the parts, put the pump back together and refill the fountain.
When to replace a part: The pump is still dead after a full clean; Pioneer sells the 12V pump and transformer 3026A as the replacement.

Water sensor needs calibrating (low-water alert with a full tank, or flow that stops and starts)
- Press and hold the fountain in the Petlibro app and unbind it.
- Reset the fountain and add it to the app again.
- When the app starts the calibration, lift the tank off the base and clear everything off the base.
- Make sure the base sits on a flat, stable surface, confirm in the app and finish the calibration.

Power problem, switch off or a dirty rotor shaft
- Try the original cord and adapter on another outlet or device to rule out a power fault.
- If no indicator lights glow, turn on the power switch.
- Take off the rotor cover and check that the shaft inside the tank is clean.
- Refill the tank, put the rotor back and turn it gently with a finger to see if the fountain starts.
- Clean the rotor and shaft and swap the filters about every two weeks, brushing the thin shaft only lightly.

Leak from the tank, a clogged filter or spout, or drips from the pet
- Dry the whole fountain, fill the tank, set it on a dry flat surface off the base and wait an hour to see whether the tank itself leaks.
- Move the fountain out of your pet's reach for a while; water dripping from fur or whiskers can look like a leak.
- Remove the filter and spout and run it again to see whether overflow stops.
- Replace the filters and clean the pump about every two weeks (more often with several pets).

Dirty rotor shaft, low water, clogged filter tray or an unlevel base
- Remove the rotor cover and inspect the shaft, cleaning it gently.
- Fill the tank to the maximum line.
- Replace the filter and clear hair or food from the filter tray so water drains normally instead of dripping onto the surface.
- Stand the fountain on a flat, stable surface so water does not fall straight from the outlet and splash.

Clogged filter, debris build-up or dirty pump
- Replace the filter; the maker recommends every two weeks for one pet and more often for several.
- Soak and rinse the new filter for about five minutes before fitting it.
- Clean the pump area and remove trapped hair or debris.
When to replace a part: Flow stays weak after a fresh filter and a full clean.

Pump LED blinking red because the reservoir is low or the pump is not seated
- Refill the reservoir.
- Check that the pump hangs level and is attached correctly to the top section.
- If the LED alternates red and white and flow is uneven, the water is almost gone, so top up.

Pump running low on water or with debris on the impeller
- Unplug the fountain and take out the pump.
- Open the pump, remove the impeller cap and impeller, and clean off hair and debris (a cotton swab helps).
- Refit the parts carefully and top up the water so the pump is fully submerged.
When to replace a part: The pump stays noisy once it is clean and submerged.
Filter saturated with debris, food or hair, slowing the flow
- Rinse the filter under water without soap on a regular basis.
- Replace it every 3 to 4 weeks, or sooner if it looks full or the flow drops.
- Change it more often when several pets use the fountain or the water is hard.

Pump stopped by its low-water protection
- Check the water level and refill the tank to the fill line.
- Reseat the wireless pump in its slot and make sure the base is powered.
- Clean the pump if debris is blocking it, and replace the filter on the 2 to 4 week schedule.
Hose quick connector not fully seated, or an unused opening left unplugged
- Turn the hose off and unplug the fountain.
- Press the hose-side quick connector firmly onto the fountain until it clicks.
- If you moved the hose or float valve to the other side, fit the included plug and washer in the opening you are not using.
- If the float valve was removed for indoor use, plug its opening before filling, because the fountain overflows without it.

FAQ
Why did my cat water fountain suddenly stop working?
The usual reason is low water. Many pumps shut off when the level drops under the minimum mark, and some manuals warn that running dry can damage the motor. Refill, then check the power connection and clean the pump.
How do I know if the pump is dead or just dirty?
Clean it first. Take the pump apart as far as the manual allows, clear hair and film from the impeller, rinse, and refit. If it still does not start or stays noisy after a full clean and a correct water level, it is probably worn out.
How long does a fountain pump last?
It varies by maker. Oneisall's manual puts a normal pump at roughly 1.5 to 2 years, and iPettie lists a 3-year pump warranty on one ceramic model. Check your own manual or support page for your model.
Can I run the fountain without a filter?
Some designs can run briefly, but the filter and foam also keep hair out of the pump. Read your manual before leaving the filter out, and replace it on the maker's interval.
