When to change a pet fountain filter
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. How this works.
Most manufacturers say to replace the carbon filter every 2 to 4 weeks, and foam pre-filters every 1 to 2 months. Change it sooner if the flow weakens, the water smells or tastes off, or the filter looks grey and slimy.

How often should you change the filter?
There is no universal number. Each maker publishes its own, and they differ because the filters differ: a thin pad around a small pump saturates faster than a larger cartridge. The table lists what the manufacturers say, with the page each figure came from.
| Brand and filter | Stated interval | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Catit triple action and PIXI filters | About 4 weeks (the maker says every 30 days) | Catit |
| PETLIBRO Dockstream and stainless filters | 2 weeks; more often with several pets | PETLIBRO |
| PetSafe Drinkwell carbon | 2 to 4 weeks | PetSafe |
| PetSafe Drinkwell foam pre-filter | 1 to 2 months | PetSafe |
| Oneisall carbon | 15 days in most manuals, 2 to 4 weeks in one FAQ; sponge and foam every 1 to 2 months (7 L model) | Oneisall |
| PawsPik | Up to 4 weeks (ceramic cat filters); 2 to 4 weeks on the dog filter page | PawsPik |
| Pioneer Pet | 2 to 4 weeks depending on pets and water | Pioneer Pet |
| PETKIT | 2 to 4 weeks; the app sends a reminder | PETKIT |
| iPettie Tritone | The page does not state an interval | iPettie |
Checked October 2026. Where a brand shows a range, start at the short end if you have more than one pet, if the fountain sits near food or litter, or if your tap water leaves marks on the bowl.
Signs the filter is spent
Do not wait for the calendar if you see any of these:
- The stream is thinner or the bubbling stops while the tank is full.
- The water smells, even right after a refill.
- The filter looks grey or brown, feels slimy, or has hair and food trapped in the surface layer.
- The pump is louder or gurgles, which can mean it is pulling through a clogged pad.
- Your fountain has a filter reminder (PETKIT's app, some Oneisall models) and it has been triggered.
The fixes section walks through what else to rule out before blaming the filter.
What happens if you skip the change?
A saturated carbon filter does not fail dramatically; it just stops doing its job. Odors and tastes pass through, debris stays in the water, and slime has more to feed on. The part you notice first is mechanical: a clogged pad starves the pump, flow weakens, and a pump that runs strained is noisier and may wear faster. Several fix records in our database list a clogged filter as the cause of weak flow or fast clogging for Catit, PETLIBRO and PetSafe fountains. If your cat drinks less from the fountain after a few weeks, change the filter and clean the unit before assuming the cat has lost interest. If your pet's drinking changes a lot, ask your vet.
Cleaning versus replacing
| Part | Clean or replace? |
|---|---|
| Carbon, resin or triple-action filter | Replace. Soak or rinse a new one first if the manual says so (PETLIBRO and Oneisall advise about 5 minutes). |
| Foam sponge or pre-filter | Rinse under running water at every cleaning; replace on the maker's longer cycle or when it tears or stays discolored. |
| Pump | Clean at every wash, replace when worn out; see pumps. |
Take the whole fountain apart at each filter change. A fresh filter in a slimy tank gets dirty quickly. The cleaning guide has the order of steps, and the filter finder shows which filter your model takes.
FAQ
How often do you change a cat water fountain filter?
Follow your manufacturer. In our database Catit states about 30 days, PETLIBRO two weeks, PetSafe 2 to 4 weeks for carbon, and Oneisall, PETKIT and Pioneer Pet 2 to 4 weeks or a 15-day cycle depending on the model. More pets usually means sooner.
What happens if you never change the fountain filter?
A full carbon filter stops absorbing odors, debris and hair build up around the pump, flow slows, and the pump has to work harder. A clogged filter is also one of the documented causes of weak flow in the fix records of several brands.
Can I wash and reuse the carbon filter?
No manufacturer in our database describes a washable carbon filter. Soaking or rinsing a new one before first use is advised, but a used carbon filter is replaced, not cleaned.
Do I change the sponge or pre-filter as often as the filter?
Usually not. Foam pre-filters are rinsed during cleaning and replaced about every 1 to 2 months where the maker gives a figure, for example PetSafe and Oneisall.
