Outdoor dog water fountains and hose-fed bowls
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. How this works.
Only three models in our database are marketed for outdoor use: the PetSafe Drinkwell Outdoor Dog Fountain, the Drinkwell Everflow, and the Bergan Auto-Wata. Two are plug-in fountains and one is a hose-fed bowl with no power at all. All of them are for mild weather; the two PetSafe sources set a floor of about 4.4 C (40 F).

We did not handle these fountains ourselves: every figure above is the manufacturer's own claim, linked to its source. How we research.
How we picked these three
The rule is narrow on purpose: the maker's own page or manual says the product is for outdoor use or connects to a garden hose, it lists dogs, and it is a current model. Three products pass. We did not stretch the rule to cover indoor fountains that "might" work on a patio, because a maker that does not describe outdoor use has also not told you how it copes with cold, rain or dirt.
Because only two brands qualify, treat this as a short decision page rather than a ranking. We did not handle any of the products; the table repeats claims and links the sources.
Which type fits your yard
You have an outdoor outlet and a large dog. The PetSafe Outdoor Dog Fountain is the one with the big reservoir. The maker describes two reservoirs, a deep bowl and plastic that resists fading in sunlight. You fill it by hand.
You have a hose tap near the spot. The Everflow is the fountain that refills itself. A float valve keeps the bowl at a preset level when the hose is connected. Without the hose it does not refill.
You have a hose but no power. The Auto-Wata drops the pump entirely. The bowl fills through the hose connector and an internal float shuts the water off when it is full. The trade-off is that the water is still and unfiltered, and the capacity is small.
Freezing and cold weather
Both PetSafe sources give a temperature floor rather than a freeze-protection method: outdoors above 40 F (4.4 C) for the Outdoor Dog Fountain, and no running below 4.4 C for the Everflow. Neither says what happens to the pump if ice forms, so do not rely on the unit to cope. In practice this means:
- Unplug it and bring it indoors, or drain it, before nights near freezing.
- Disconnect and drain the garden hose, since water left in a hose line can freeze at the connector.
- A dog that needs outdoor water all winter needs a different product category (heated bowls), which this page does not cover.
Sun, algae and placement
The Outdoor Dog Fountain page says the plastic is UV-resistant and helps prevent fading. That is a claim about the plastic, not about the water. Makers do not give algae guidance for these models, so this part is general: still water in light warms and grows film faster, so a shaded, level spot and a regular wash help. The Everflow guide asks for a full clean weekly and a pump clean every two weeks, and gives its carbon filter a shorter life outdoors (1 to 2 weeks, against 2 to 4 indoors).
Placement tips that follow from the designs: keep a plug-in unit and its adapter off wet ground and away from sprinklers, keep the cable out of your dog's reach, and set the hose-fed units on a firm, level surface so the float works as intended. Follow the manual for any outdoor-rated power connection.
Hose setup basics
The Everflow manual covers a quick connector on the hose side and a plug and washer for the opening you do not use. If the connector is not fully seated or an opening is left unplugged, it can leak; our leaking fix page lists the manual's steps. If you remove the float valve for indoor use, plug its opening before filling, as the fountain would otherwise overflow. The Auto-Wata page names the garden-hose connector on its raised back housing and gives no pressure range or cleaning steps, so rinse the bowl whenever you notice film.
Can I use an indoor fountain outside instead?
Possibly, but nothing from the maker supports it for the other models in our data, and the large dog page notes that only one of them is built for outdoor use. If you want cordless options, the cordless page lists battery models, with the caveat that their makers do not call them outdoor products.
Who each model suits
PetSafe Drinkwell Outdoor Dog Fountain
Good fit: A big 13.3 L plug-in fountain in UV-resistant plastic that the maker says can sit outdoors above 40 F (about 4.4 C).
Skip it if: A spot without an outlet, or a yard that gets cold early; the maker gives a minimum temperature and no freezing guidance.

PetSafe Drinkwell Everflow Indoor/Outdoor Fountain
Good fit: A fountain that tops itself up from a garden hose through a float valve, with the maker's weekly clean and 2-week pump clean written down.
Skip it if: Cold climates; the maker says not to run it below 4.4 C. Also not for anyone who wants a fully hands-off bowl, since it has a clean schedule.

Bergan Auto-Wata
Good fit: A no-power, no-pump bowl that connects to a garden hose and refills through an internal float; it can stand on the ground or hang on a wall per the maker.
Skip it if: Anyone who wants moving or filtered water. It is a bowl, not a fountain, and it holds only about 1.4 L.
FAQ
Can a dog water fountain stay outside in winter?
Not according to the two outdoor fountains in our data. PetSafe says the Outdoor Dog Fountain goes outdoors when temperatures are above 40 F, and the Everflow guide says not to run it below 4.4 C. Bring it in or switch it off before frost.
Is there an outdoor dog fountain that works without an outlet?
In our data, only the Bergan Auto-Wata, which has no pump and uses a hose and a float. It does not circulate or filter water. Battery fountains exist, but none of their makers describe them as outdoor models.
How much hose pressure do these need?
The makers' pages we read give no pressure figure. The Everflow manual covers the quick connector and the float valve, so follow its setup steps and turn the hose off when you clean or leave.
Do you list step-on or pedal dog fountains?
No. We have no step-on model in the database with a maker source, so we do not list one.
